Grades K-2, Thursday, February 6, 7:00-8:15 PM

New this year, the Bowman Science Fair will span two nights. It will be exciting to learn from our budding Bowman scientists who will present and demonstrate their projects. Everyone is welcome to attend the Science Fair, even if they are not presenting a project. Please plan to come and support your fellow students! For more information, visit the PTA’s Science Fair website.

Also new this year, Bowman student scientists are invited to display their Science Fair projects during the school day so that all students can view and learn about their classmates’ projects. Projects will be displayed on Thursday and Friday mornings, following each evening’s fair, and each classroom will have an opportunity to visit the displays.

Congratulations to the Brick Legends Team!

The Brick Legends Won an Innovative Solution Award, and qualified for the State Finals for Lego Robotics!

Four Bowman 4th graders banded together to form the Brick Legends Team. Ian Chung, Matei Bennett, Lincoln Rowan, and Charles Chen (photo order). The team was formed to compete in a Lego Robotics Tournament held at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in December 2019. They worked together 2 evenings a week from September to December.

The team built a robot, and wrote the code for it to perform specific missions during a timed event of 2 minutes, and 30 seconds. Based on the robot performance, the referees gave points for the missions accomplished during the competition.

Part of the competition was to present a solution to a problem in their community.  The team identified a problem, brain stormed options, and developed a theoretical solution. They presented this process to the Judges. After the presentation, the Judges asked questions of the different members about how they reached their conclusions. They were excited to win the Innovative Solution Award.

We are proud of the Brick Legends for all their hard work!

Math Team News

The Bowman Math Teams meet weekly before school, and recently the 4th and 5th grade teams participated in the second of five Continental Math League competitions. Students were given 6 problems and had 30 minutes to solve them independently. Each correct answer was worth 1 point and the top 6 scores became the team’s score.

4th grade: There are 131 teams participating in this year’s CML Grade 4 Math at the Pythagorean level (the higher of the 2 levels). Bowman’s team scored 33/36, compared to a national median score of 26/36. Bowman’s total score through two tests is 65/72, which puts them in the top 13% in the country and #2 in New England. Congratulations to Bart B., Matei B., and Vivek A. who all had a perfect score on their test.

5th grade: There are 132 teams participating in this year’s CML Grade 5 Math at the Pythagorean level (the higher of the 2 levels). Bowman’s team scored 31/36, compared to a national median score of 18/36. Bowman’s total score through two tests is 67/72, which puts them in the top 5% in the country and #1 in New England. Congratulations to Aaron Y. who had a perfect score on his test.

Excellent job to both teams! Every member of the team worked hard and can take pride in this accomplishment.

The third competition for 4th and 5th grade teams will take place in January, and the first competition for 3rd grade will take place in January.

Disco Bingo – Shadow

Bingo Night is a fun filled night for the whole family with teacher and student Bingo callers. Volunteers focus on publicizing the annual event (usually in Winter), obtaining prizes and recruiting Bingo callers. If you’re interested please email [email protected].

Parent Volunteers for Artsonia

The art room is looking for three volunteers for next year (2020-2021), to help with photographing and uploading student art work for Artsonia, our online art gallery for student artwork. This is something that can be done at home with the help of an iPad or phone camera. For the last several years it’s been a great program here at Bowman. Please consider volunteering. Our current volunteer can train you before the school year ends and show you all the in’s and out’s. If you’re interested please email [email protected].

Thank You!

Bowman Broadside – Thanks and Welcome!

Many many thanks to Suman Murali, who has been publishing the Bowman Broadside for the PTA for so many years that we’ve lost count! Your hard work and dedication to this project is appreciated by all! A big welcome to Lisa Spitz, who will be publishing the Broadside starting with this issue!

Stories Under The Stars – Thank You!

Thank you to all the Bowman families and staff who came out on a chilly night to participate in our “Stories Under the Stars” family literacy night. Your presence and warmth was felt by all.

Thank you to those who shared poems, stories and songs with us during open mic, to the families who helped create a cozy camp out feel for the evening by sharing their tents with us, and to those of you who donated pj’s to cradles to crayons.

Thank you to our Assistant Principal, Ms. Beth Glick, who closed out the evening with her lively rendition of “This Little Light of Mine” leading the students in a singalong luminary parade.

Extra special thanks goes to event organizers Sisy Thomas, Melinda Nasardinov, and all the volunteers – parents & students – without whose help our event would not have been successful!

You all made our celebration of stories not only possible but truly memorable!
