Family Math Nights Returns To Bowman Virtually This Winter

Mark your calendars for the return of Family Math Nights, but virtual!

Coming up is the virtual Family Math Night for grades 4-5, which will be held on Tuesday, January 12th from 6:30-7:15 pm over Zoom. Family Math Nights are a great way for students and their families to experience the fun of math together. The PTA website will host links to some of our classic table activities (coming soon) like math games, puzzles, and brain teasers. We will run an abbreviated group activity over the Zoom session.

If you plan to attend the virtual Family Math Night for grades 4-5, please sign up on Sign-Up Genius (one slot per family), so we have an idea of how many families we will expect. We will email you the Zoom link closer to the event date.

Plan to attend a virtual Family Math Night with your student this winter. Save the dates for the upcoming Family Math Nights:

  • January 12th – Grades 4-5
  • February 23th – Grades 2-3 (NEW DATE!)
  • March 9th – Grades K-1

Questions? Email [email protected] (Taleen Gleeson, Lauren Avery, and Stephanie Ryan). Thank you!

2021 Bowman Science Fair

The Science Fair is virtual this year!

We hope your children will participate and share their interest in science as they’ve done in previous years. Here’s a short overview of this year’s Fair:

What’s the same

  • Student Scientists are welcome to work individually or in small groups.
  • Students should design a project that answers a hypothesis by doing an experiment or demonstration. Visit the “What to do?” page for project design guidance.

What’s different

  • Since we are not able to gather in person, students will share their projects in a Google slideshow (using their LPS, Bowman School account). Students are encouraged to include a combination of photos, videos, and text in their slideshows.
  • Projects will be featured on the Bowman Science Fair website and will be available for all of the Bowman community to view.
  • Depending on student demand and the number of Visiting Scientist volunteers, students can opt to discuss their projects with a Visiting Scientist via a Zoom call. Zoom calls will likely be held among 2-4 student groups sharing their projects with the Visiting Scientist and their classmates in the same grade.
  • Parents – your consent is needed! Please check the parent consent box on the registration form to allow your child’s image and/or name to appear on their slideshow.
  • Parents – your consent is needed! If you would like your child to have a Zoom call with a Visiting Scientist, please check the parent consent box on the registration form.

Key dates

  • Registration open: Monday, Dec 14th – Friday, Feb 5th (Deadline Extended!)
  • Project slideshow links due: Sunday, Feb 21st
  • Visiting Scientist zoom calls (tentative): Monday, March 1st – Thursday, March 11th

Volunteers Needed!

Parent Volunteers needed for after school special interest clubs!

Do you have a special skill or activity that you and your kids love to do? We are looking for parent/guardian volunteers interested in hosting an after-school virtual club this winter:

  • Lego building
  • Drawing/cartooning
  • Chess
  • Crafts
  • Knitting
  • Hour of code
  • something else!

Please let us know if you’d like to host one of these or something else! It could be weekly, monthly, or just a one-time event. Please email [email protected]

Bowman LEF Representative

Lexington Education Foundation (LEF) is looking for a Bowman Parent Representative. Join the LEF School partnership committee and act as the liaison between Bowman and LEF. Support teachers in applying for grants, present the grants to the LEF team, and review/vote on all grant requests LEF receives. LEF has monthly school partnership meetings and a few additional meetings in the spring to review grants. Please email [email protected]

Disco Bingo Event Coordinator

Are you a party planner? Bingo Night is a fun-filled night for the whole family with teacher and student Bingo callers, a DJ, and prizes! Organizers focus on publicizing the annual event (Early April), obtaining prizes, and recruiting Bingo callers. Work in conjunction with the Class Basket Raffle organizers, for this fun-filled fundraiser evening. This is a good position for one or two volunteers. We would like to reinvent this event for the 2020-21 school year, and we need an organizer to help pick up where we left off after that. Our current organizer will be graduating soon and we’d love to pass this event on to a new team of volunteers. Please email [email protected]

Class Basket Raffle Coordinator

We are in need of one or two more parent volunteers to help with the Class Basket Raffle for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond. Raffle Baskets are usually on display in the school for two weeks, and the Raffle is held during Disco Bingo Night. Organizers communicate with room parents, create a signup for baskets, promote and sell raffle tickets before and during the event, and coordinate with Disco Bingo organizers on the evening of the event. This is an important fundraiser for the PTA and is ideal for a team of 2-4 volunteers. We are trying to reinvent this event for the 2020-21 school year, and we would love to do a similar event remotely, or have the raffle off-site, socially distanced and/or broadcast live on zoom. We need your creative ideas on how to make this event a success. Please email [email protected]

Thank You!

Families in Need Holiday Gift Drive

Many thanks to Carrie Rose and Radha Badani for organizing this year’s gift drive. Thanks to the generosity of our Bowman community, we raised close to $500 more than what we had committed to with Second Step, for a total of $3,500 in gift card donations!

Library Volunteers

Thank you to our library volunteer organizers, and all of the parent volunteers who have helped out with the K-1 lunchtime read-alouds so far this school year. We really appreciate everyone who has stepped up to make lunchtime more fun for our youngest students.

Cookie Decorating Contest, Read-A-Thon, and Virtual Book Fair

A HUGE thank you to Lakshmi Ramanath, Brandy Hartford, and our fundraising team for organizing the Cookie Decorating Contest, Read-A-Thon, Book Fair, and Winter Break Parent Read-Aloud. We really appreciate all of these great activities, and your creativity and enthusiasm. And thank you to all the families who purchased cookie kits and participated in the events over the winter break!
